North Orlando Family Board Game Cancelled

Well, we attempted a new club and gave it two weeks. Since it is a side project and essentially nobody showed any support for the club by coming out, I have to call it quits.

We are sorry, and we would have really enjoyed having a group of people that liked to play games, but board games aren’t much fun when you sit around by yourself in a library for four hours or so all alone.

We are still going to be at Half Off Books, so if you want to play games with us, we will be at the stores twice a month. We will have our open games there and they will be available for you to play.

If North Orlando wants the game club back, please leave comments here and e-mail me directly, so I can coordinate a reinvigoration of the club.

So, come out and see us at Half Off Books, both in Orange City and Altamonte Springs, in Orlando.

We look forward to meeting you and gaming with you all.

North Orlando Family Board Game Club Update

We had our first game day at the DeBary Library. We will be holding the club here for at least the next three months.

We had a large selection of games and one new visitor who wanted to check it out and see what we were doing. Unfortunately, there were a couple of folks who contacted me and were unable to make it. Maybe next month.

So, my friend John and I had a great day of playing games and looking at how we can enhance www.bestdanggames.com for all of you.

We played one old game, Settlers of Catan. I introduced John to three other games, as well. We played Memoir 44 and it went over alright. He liked it, but in the end, John seems to be a eurogame lover, like myself.

We continued the party back at my place and included my wife and daughter. We learned how to play Puerto Rico and played two rounds of Shadows Over Camelot.

John, my daughter, and my wife playing Shadows Over Camelot

The first game of Shadows was without the traitor. We played a tense game with everyone trying to remember and understand how to play. When we won, we immediately said “Let’s do that again!” So, we did.

We all thought my daughter was the traitor, but she would keep doing stuff to prove she wasn’t. In the end, John ended up revealing himself as the trator just so he could taunt us. In the end, we got SPANKED and evil ran us over like a steamroller. I expect this will be a game we play again.

Regarding the next event, we invite you to come out and play some games if you are in the North Orlando area. To learn more about our events, check out this posting about the North Orlando Family Board Game Club.

North Orlando Family Board Game Club

For anyone in the North Orlando, Florida area, we are starting a monthly game day.

The Orlando areas we expect to pull from include (but are not limited to):

  • Longwood
  • Lake Mary
  • Sanford
  • Deltona
  • Debary
  • Deland
  • Orange City
  • Daytona

In looking at options in the general area, there seem to be two places to the southern part of town where people go to play – one over by Aloma, and another down off of Colonial. This is extremely inconvienient for those of us at the north end of town. So, I said “Hey, why don’t we try and set one up for the north end of town?”. And with that, I spoke to the Volusia County Library System.

The good folks at the Debary Library, on 17-92 have offered us a room to play board games on the last Saturday of the month. I have reserved the room for us for the next four months. I will expand it as long as gamers keep coming out to play.

Here is their contact information and address.

200 N. Charles R. Beall Blvd.
DeBary FL 32713
(386) 668-3835

The dates are:

  • May 31
  • June 28
  • July 26
  • August 30

The times for each Saturday are the same: 1:00 – 4:45. We have to be out and cleaned up by then because the library closes at 5:00 SHARP!

My plan is to use the first hour to teach folks how to play some new games and then the rest of the time, we can just roll it old school like.

I think it would be good for the first week, May 31, to teach the standard gateway games.

  • Settlers of Catan
  • Ticket to Ride
  • Carcassonne

I have one copy of each game for the club to use. I also have Starcraft, Memoir 44, Shadows Over Camelot, Arkham Horror, and Last Night On Earth – The Zombie Game available for play. If you want to bring some of your own games, feel free.

If you plan to come out or have any questions, please RSVP to bcbcbusiness@hotmail.com so we know to expect you. I am looking forward to meeting you and playing some games with you all. See you then.

By the way, if you are a local coffee shop/pizzaria/book store…or know of one that would like to sponsor the club, we can meet there at other times as well. Just contact us at the same e-mail and we can work it out.
