Jay Tummelson of Rio Grande Games Offers an Interview

We have been a little slow to edit and post our interviews. We have a few of them in the pipeline. We got a chance to speak with Jay Tummelson, the owner of Rio Grande Games. His game publishing company is responsible for most of the great European Family Strategy Games that make their way over to the US. Rio Grande Games is a consistant winner of the Spiel Des Jahres award (German Game of the Year).

Some of his stand-out games include:

  • Carcassonne
  • Puerto Rico
  • Dominion
  • Stone Age
  • Race For The Galaxy
  • Power Grid
  • Lost Cities
  • Thurn & Taxis
  • Zooloretto
  • Galaxy Trucker

That list goes on and on. If you want to learn a few strategy tips and see what makes Jay and Rio Grande tick, give this set of interviews a listen.

In this one, he speaks to us about the popularity of Dominion and how Dominion: Intrigue works with it.

In this portion of the interview, he talks about his take on what Rio Grande Games and Strategy Games are all about and why his company enjoys making them. He also talks about his philosophy on why allowing people to demo his games is important to him.

Two New Settlers of Catan Expansion Videos

We posted a two-part video series for Settlers of Catan. It came to our attention that there were several videos about Settlers of Catan, but none that really showed you what was in the boxes of the expansions or how the expansions help enhance the game. One of the expansions has scenarios, another has campaigns & variants, while the third actually alters the standard gameplay of Settlers of Catan.

Here is Part 1. In it, Barry introduces Catan: Seafarers and Catan: Cities & Knights.

Here is Part 2. In it, Barry introduces Catan: Traders & Barbarians and the 5-6 Player extensions.

Descent: Journeys In The Dark – New Video Posted

Hey gamers!

We put together another video for you. This one is about a really big game by Fantasy Flight Games. If you like dungeon crawling and you have not seen Descent, you need to check it out.

Descent is the core game in a system – there are several expansions that go with it. For those of you that might even be curious, this game is in the same “universe” as Runebound, but they are not even close to the same game. Basically, they are similar in the fact that some of the heroes are the same and you will find some of the same monsters. Otherwise…totally different gaming experiences.

Descent is also modeled after the modular system Fantasy Flight introduced with DOOM: The Board Game. So, if you were interested in that, you will probably like this one.

Like we said, this is a big game. It is so big that Gary mentions that “even though we would love for you to buy all the expansions and the core game at one time, we don’t recommend that approach”.

Hope this helps you identify if this is a game you would like to play.

Zombie-Themed Games – A New Video

We put another video together for you. This time, Barry introduces the genre by sharing the game Zombies!!!, its expansions, and Last Night On Earth. These are obviously not the only zombie games on the market – Zombiegeddon was just released this month. But, these two games are the front-runners when it comes to this B-Movie theme for gaming.

If you want to see these two games up close with more information, check out these two videos:
